Scope of Work:
The HVAC Mechanic supports the U.S. Army Garrison by performing skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems in accordance with technical specifications, safety standards, and Army regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Install, service, and repair HVAC/R systems and components (e.g., compressors, air handlers, chillers, ductwork, thermostats) based on blueprints and specifications.
- Perform pipefitting, brazing, soldering, and welding tasks to join tubing, fittings, and support assemblies.
- Connect electrical wiring and controls; replace thermostats, switches, fuses, and relays.
- Charge systems with refrigerant, test for leaks, and ensure compliance with EPA Section 608 standards.
- Conduct preventive maintenance, including filter changes, coil cleaning, belt inspections, and drain clearing.
- Use gauges and diagnostic tools to test system performance and make necessary adjustments.
- Maintain accurate service records in accordance with DA PAM 420-11, AR 420-1, and contract requirements.
- Follow all safety protocols (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, Army policy) when working on equipment or in mechanical spaces.
- May service large-capacity systems (up to 20 tons) in warehouses and industrial areas.
- Perform minor related tasks such as touch-up painting and lighting replacement in support of HVAC functions.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Must possess a valid EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification (Section 608).
- Must maintain valid licenses/credentials as required by the contract and/or state.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a fully adjudicated Secret Clearance.
- Must be able to obtain an interim Secret Clearance prior to start.
- Advanced knowledge of HVAC/R systems, including refrigerant cycles, controls (electrical, pneumatic, and digital), and building automation systems (EMS/BAS).
- Proficient in diagnostics, troubleshooting, soldering, brazing, and using test equipment (e.g., gauges, voltmeters, leak detectors).
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Working knowledge of related trades, including plumbing, electrical, and sheet metal.
- Familiarity with safety procedures, PPE requirements, and hazard identification.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and a safe driving record, in accordance with company policy, to operate vehicles or equipment as required for the position.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
- Physical requirements include (but are not limited to) the ability to lift up to 100 pounds, pushing, pulling, carrying, stooping, bending, squatting, and reaching for long periods of time.
- Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to work on-call, alternate, and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
- Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and around various hazards with appropriate PPE.
- Exposure to hazards such as electrical components, refrigerant gases, fumes, and loud noise.
- Must have the endurance to complete physically demanding tasks and respond to emergency repair situations at any time.
